The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), according to its governor, Godwin Emiefele, won’t interfere with the 2023 general election.
The governor of the CBN promised that the bank wouldn’t cause any problems for the upcoming elections during a meeting with Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the other 11 National Commissioners.
He said “The CBN will not allow itself to be used as agents to frustrate the fourth coming election which is a positive assignment.
“If you require cash to pay some of your service providers, we will make it available to you. We will not allow ourselves to be seen as agents that frustrate a genuine assignment.”
His statement comes after the INEC chairman asked the top bank to make all the funds necessary to pay for the election’s logistics available.
The CBN governor was informed by the INEC chairman that the elections in 2023 will be the best in Nigerian history. However, questions have since been raised concerning the procedures leading up to the elections.
Yakubu said that even though the commission had moved all of its accounts to the apex bank at the state and federal levels, some of the services provided to the commission still required payment in cash.
