Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has faced criticism from the Lagos State Police Command PRO for a negative report he published on the police.
Soyombo had tweeted his worries about the presence of a POS operator within the O/C Surveillance office at Area J Police Station Elemoro, Ibeju/Lekki.
Why did you convert your police station into a cash-or-PoS business where there is never a free bail? Soyombo. Asked the police,
Soyombo was criticized by Hundeyin for failing to confirm what the PoS operator was doing at the station by taking a screenshot of Soyombo’s tweet.
Investigative journalists are unable to determine whether the woman frequents the area or whether anyone has actually been extorted using her services, according to Hundeyin.
“Often times, people have transaction issues with POS operators and end up in police stations. Are we to stop them from coming in with their machines?”
He continued: “You see one unverified appearance and you are quick to force it to fit into your predetermined narrative.
If there’s no story, stay quiet. Don’t force yourself to remain relevant.?
Fisayo hit back, writing:
“Police spokesman who keeps defending corruption, how do you even sleep at night? Do you sometimes have a conscience — I mean 10secs of conscience out of 24hrs/day?
“I’ll post an audio from that police station soon, and you can tell us if it looks like ‘people having issues’.”
“Anyone can bring any audio from anywhere. But why do you sometimes come up with contrived stories?
“Is this you stylishly asking me not to release the audio, Benjamin Hundeyin Okay, I won’t release it anymore.”
